The Future Security initiative at New America is a partnership between New America and Arizona State University. “It reconceptualizes U.S. security policy towards a holistic engagement with current and future challenges including domestic terrorism, armed drones, climate change, pandemics, rising authoritarianism, and new and emerging technologies.an initiative “for reimagining a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable global order.”

This report analyzes the emergence of generative AI tools and outlines how the lack of communication of AI’s opportunities and vulnerabilities between federal agencies and research institutions creates a security threat. The report proposes a universal labeling system called “Simplified Algorithms for User Learning” (“SAUL”) and “advocates for further research of the label, enforcement of the voluntary design, and oversight by a participatory public council.”.
